COOLING TOWERS, CONDENSER CIRCUITS AND EVAPORATIVE
CONDENSER |
|
SYSTEMS |
 |
|
As a liquid, water uniquely remains a liquid through a
100oC temperature range. As a liquid it can absorb
heat at any point within this range, remain a liquid
and be moved to another point to release that absorbed
heat. |
|
Cooling towers and evaporative condensers make use of
the above principle and are used to effectively remove
and transfer heat to the atmosphere. |
|
This heat loss can result in the evaporation of water
from these systems and concentration of its dissolved
ingredients. These ingredients may include microbes,
like Legionella pneumophila along with dissolved
solids capable of constituting a nutrient base for
them. This, together with water temperatures above
20oC can encourage microbial proliferation, which, if
left unchecked, can result in large numbers of
potentially harmful microbes of this sort inhabiting
these systems. |
|
For this reason, the water within cooling towers,
condenser circuits and evaporative condensers should
be regularly inspected, analysed and tested to ensure
compliance to the requirements of the Health and
Safety Commissions’ Approved Code of Practice and
Guidance, L8, The Control Of Legionella Bacteria In
Water Systems. |
|
Basic daily and weekly checks should be made and
monthly analyses should be conducted to ensure that
conditions capable of sustaining the proliferation and
dissemination of such microbes in water are minimised. |
|
Cooling towers are often associated with Legionnaires
disease but it must be stressed that Legionnaires
disease cannot be associated with good cooling tower
management. |
